This workshop aims to explore movement along the horizon line, not just as a mere intersection between sky and earth, but as a journey towards physical, emotional, and poetic perspectives. Vertical dance involves traversing walls, transforming and expanding our perception of emptiness and gravity.

Over the course of 30 hours, participants will engage in practices designed to stimulate their bodies towards attitudes of freedom, interconnectedness, and athleticism. The workshop takes place a few meters above the ground, with preparatory exercises to familiarize participants with vertical movement.

While prior movement experience is beneficial, the workshop welcomes individuals with no previous vertical dance experience. Full attendance throughout the entire course is mandatory.

Marianna Andrigo | Vertical Waves Project

Marianna Andrigo discovered vertical dance in 2002, marking the beginning of her artistic journey. Her interests have consistently revolved around the performative body, explored both in ground-based practices and in the aerial realm. Influenced by her studies in politics, philosophy, and Eastern practices, her work delves into questions that intersect composition, performative action, curation, training, and the conceptualization of projects that integrate body, mind, and community. In 2010, Marianna co-founded Vertical Waves, a company dedicated to creating performances tailored for architectural spaces and voids.

*Vertical Waves employs the wall as a floor, positioning the performer perpendicular to the vertical plane. This approach necessitates a new orientation and engages musculature to support the spinal column’s efforts. Disengaged from the ground, it facilitates exploration of the void, allowing performers to discover new orientations and navigate weight relationships within the body. Performers wear harnesses equipped with descenders, tools that secure them to work ropes. This symbiotic relationship with equipment fosters trust, enabling performers to unleash their dance and, with experience, venture into greater heights!
